Introduction to Film Production

Interested in making films, but never really tried it before? This course is perfect for those with an interest in film and the desire to start learning the technical skills needed to blossom as filmmakers. The art of film will be conveyed through discussions and screenings, but the focus of this course will be hands-on production, where participants will learn filmmaking by making short films under the guidance of award-winning filmmaker Noah Hutton. Camera techniques, lighting, sound recording, and the basic of editing will be covered. No previous experience in these areas is required. All participants will work together to shoot and edit their own short film, and will graduate from the course with a DVD of their project.

Advanced Filmmaking Techniques

Directing a narrative film requires both a mastery of all its technical components- camera, lights, and sound-as well as the ability to work with actors to find the right emotion in each and every moment on film. In this course, participants will learn how to script, storyboard, produce, direct, and edit their own narrative shorts. Hands-on filmmaking will be supplemented with discussions and film screenings. While the technical details will be covered, participants are expected to have a basic understanding of production techniques and to have used a video camera before. All participants will graduate the course with a DVD of their class project.

Documentary Filmmaking

Documentary filmmaking is about finding the story and then making sure the camera is where the story is. Through a combination of discussions, film screenings and hands-on production, this course, taught by award-winning documentary director Noah Hutton, will familiarize students with the basics of locating the story, then producing, shooting, lighting, sound recording and editing documentary films. You will learn how to work with state-of-the-art HD video cameras, tripods, basic lighting packages, sound recording equipment and basic editing systems. We will discuss techniques to improve storytelling skills and creative decision-making, then take those skills out of the classroom to produce original short documentaries. Participants will graduate the course with a finished DVD of their class project.

Video Editing

Editing film and video is about movement, the play of light, color, sound and graphics. In this 8-lesson class, you'll learn about video editing from Noah Hutton, an award-winning filmmaker. The class explores the many techniques that can be applied in all editing programs, such as Avid, Premiere, and Final Cut Pro. But the main focus goes beyond developing software skills-it's on tapping into the magic behind video editing and the fun to be had doing it. Class projects include editing a commercial, an interview, a narrative scene, a music video, and a documentary short, all with professional titles and clean sound. Participants will leave with their editing credit on a DVD of a finished video project.
